How to get there
I recommend leaving early in the morning to Molo Beverello so you can get the most out of your day. The ferry ticket will cost you 44 euros for the round trip. Once you get to Capri book a boat tour. Since I was with a group of ten people booking a private boat tour of the island was easy. Make sure to haggle!
Capri by boat
Tip: You have to see Capri first by boat and then by land to fully experience it.
Arguably the most well-known attraction in Capri is the Blue Grotto, a cave that receives illumination from a special blue light that seeps through an underwater chamber. However, due to its popularity, there are lots of boats and visitors unfortunately do not get a chance to spend a lot of time admiring this natural beauty.
Instead, our boat’s captain took us to Grotta Bianca. From inside you see the contrast between the white light of the cave entrance and the blue of the sea which creates a turquoise light spectacle.
On our way to Grotta Verde, we passed by the Faraglioni. The Faraglioni are three large imposing rocks that are seen in all postcards of Capri. One of these Faraglioni has the famous lovers’ arch and the captain took us through it for some spectacular views from inside the rock.
Once you get to Grotta Verde get ready to swim. In October the water was around 20°C. The cave entrance itself is small, however, once you swim into the cave you see a light shining from inside. Inside this cave is a chamber where the ceiling of the cave collapses and rays of sunlight shine into the cave.
Afterward, our boat captain dropped us off at Marina Piccola. This small beach surrounded by restaurants, tourists, and residents sunbathing is a good place to start seeing Capri by land.
If you have time you can also take trips to other destinations like the Amalfi Coast or the neighboring island of Ischia.
Capri by land
There are two main towns in Capri, Capri Town and Anacapri. Capri Town is renowned for its designer stores, luxury hotels, and bustling piazzas including Piazza Umberto I, referred to as the “Piazzetta.” Perched higher on the island, is Anacapri with breathtaking views.
From the coast, you can follow a street up to La Piazzetta, Capri’s central plaza. Here the iconic clock tower chimes every 15 minutes as you relax eating gelato. The town sits atop the island, far above the sea giving you a nice view across the sea to Naples and Vesuvius.
The best view of Capri however is at the Giardini di Augusto (Gardens of Augustus). The flower-filled gardens of Giardini di Augusto offer the best views of the three Faraglioni rocks.
Note: The terraces of Giardini di Augusto are located only 10 minutes from la Piazzetta.
Use the cable car from La Piazzetta back down to Marina Grande for just 2 EUR. You can take it easy and take in the view as well.
Note: Capri was also an important historical site for the Greeks and Romans, who left behind architectural artifacts like the ruins of Villa Jovis, the ancient home of Emperor Tiberius.
Where to Stay
If you decide to visit Capri only for the day keep in mind that the last ferry from Capri to Naples is at 20:15. I chose Naples as my home base to explore the Amalfi Coast, but you can also stay overnight in Capri as well as in other coastal towns, such as Positano, Sorrento, or Amalfi. There are lots of affordable options for accommodation, especially during the off-season! When searching for a place to stay, I usually start with Airbnb since there is always something within budget to suit everyone’s needs.

Where to Eat & drink
For dinner, we headed close to Napoli Centrale for a delicious seafood-centric meal at Mimi alla Ferrovia.
For a fun night out in Naples Piazza Bellini is a sure bet on Saturday since the weekend starts on Saturday in Italy.
The streets fill up with people standing outside the bars sipping at their drinks and chatting. You’ll have a great night moving from bar to bar, speaking with the students and young workers of Napoli drinking beers and Aperol Spritz.
